• Demand for British-made trucks is stronger abroad than at home, according to latest Government figures.
Commercial vehicle sales in the UK in July were only 0.9% up on July last year—but sales of trucks made for export surged ahead by 5449%.
British hauliers bought 13% more trucks in the second quarter of 1995 than they did in the second quarter of 1994 but exports rose by over 22% as booming business encouraged foreign hauliers to renew their fleets.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders seized on the figures as good news for British truck production. It warns that August's figures could change the picture but so far August is turning into a boom month as UK hauliers who have delayed new truck purchases snap up N-reg vehicles.
