KNOWN as the Perfect Oil Retainer, a self-contained, self-aligning oilsealing device with interesting features is marketed by the Super Oil Seal Manufacturing Co. (England), Ltd., River Lee Road, Greet, Birmingham, 11. The device comprises a leather packing member accommodated in a metal housing, the leather being kept in contact with the shaft through the medium of a coil spring, which exerts a uniform pressure on the packing. Within the housing is a locking device to prevent rotation of the packing member within the assembly.
The leather used in the device is specially tanned and treated to provide smooth and efficient contact without scoring or damaging the shaft.

The packing member is of mediumhard consistency before assembly, but when, exposed to oil or grease becomes pliable, and reacts readily to the spring pressure, offering little frictional resistance on the shaft. When used OD water pumps, all the metal parts are plated, and special leather packing members are provided.
The Perfect Oil Retainer device is manufactured in a number of standard
sizes for shafts from in. to 12 ins. diameter. The accompanying drawing illustrates the neatness of the device, and as an example of its actual size, the dimensions of a retainer suitable for a shaft of 2i. ins, diameter are shown to have an outside diameter of 3.458 ins, and a width of
