An Old Buckinghamshire Bridge to be Preserved : How Marlow is Linked Up with Local Towns.

ONE of the most picturesque bridges in this country is that across the .Thames at Marlow. "The broad sweep

of the weir, the picturesque river side lawns a n d houses embowered in flowers, the graceful suspension bridge, the handsome spire of the church, with the old elms and the distant hills in the background, combine to make a picture of surpassing beauty." Such is a well-known writer's description of the view enjoyed from the river near Marlow Lock.

Constructed in 1831 and connecting the counties of -Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, the bridge has, in these days of heavy commercial motors become somewhat out of date, and as it had been declared unsafe for loads of over five tons, the Buckingham County Council decided some little while ago to replace it by one of more modern type and a wider scope of utility. The old bridge has, however, been saved for the council has, in view of the public's expressed opinion, recently reconsidered its decision, and the existing bridge is to be retained and strengthened.

Marlow, which lies midway between Maidenhead and Henley, is a very ancient place dating hack to before the time of William the Conqueror, but to day it is quite up-to-date and the bus fleet operated by Marlow and District Motor Services Ltd., connects it with surrounding towus. The buses, all of Which are medium-capacity Karriers, cover more than 9,000 miles per week— an average of approximately 750 miles per vehicle—and, over the various routes, carry many thousands of passengers in comfort and Safety.

The company. Which was formed in October, 1925, is now controlled by the Thames Valley Traction Co., Ltd. The principal routes operated are those linking .Marlow with Maidenhead, High Wycombe and Wokingham, and those connecting . Maidenhead with Henley, Pinkney's Green and Marlow Common. The Marlow-Wokingham service is run by way of Henley and Twyford.

It is understood that the Karrier buses are giving great satisfaction. 13113
