Kevin Swallow headed down to one of CVAs regular auctions to check out the prices.

There were some good quality tippers among the lots at the recent Commercial Vehicle Auctions sale in Doncaster and most of them sold, as did a good mix of fleet-spec tractors and 7.5-tonners.

Standing out from the crowd was a new 340hp Volvo FM9 eight-wheeler, with a steel body and two-year manufacturers' driveline warranty It came from a civil engineer who seemed to have ordered one too many, and also had three-years' warranty on the crane. The winning bid was £73,500 (ex-VAT).

The rarely spotted pre-Highway Renault Kerax is really too heavy for anything except muckaway, but when they come up they always find a new home. A 2001 Y-plate Kerax 8x4 tipper with 340hp engine and day cab fetched £25,250 (ex-VAT) while a threeyear-old version with the same engine got £21,750 (ex-VAT).

An MAN FE410A 8x4 tipper on a 2002 plate went under the hammer for £38,500 (exVAT) although an older W-reg MAN 35-364 8x4 tipper wasn't sold and a smart looking Scania P114 day cab tipper with a 340hp engine also failed to attract enough interest on the day.

Away from the tippers there were some workhorse tractors that went through successfully.TWo Scania 1997 P124L 400hp 6x2 fleet-spec tractors sold for £8,550 (ex-VAT) apiece while a more powerful 460hp 4x2 R144 fetched £11,750 (ex-VAT).

Continuing the fleet tractor theme, three neat-looking Volvo FM12 6x2 sleepers on 2000 plates all found buyers; the first for £16,500 (ex-VAT).

A 2003 6x2 Daf XF95 480 with a Space Cab, a mid-lift wde,77,000km on the clock and some manufacturers' warranty attracted plenty of interest and sold for dead on recommended trade price quoted in Cap's Red Book for Commercial Vehicle Values for October.

There was a Jack Allen front-end loaddisposal Mercedes-Benz Atego 2628 6x4 which sold for £35,000 (ex-VAT).

• At Doncaster, 405 vans, trucks and trailers were up for sale with 189 eventually being sold. Turnover for the day was 086,000 (ex-VAT) with two notable sales, the 2003-registered Volvo F1119 tipper and the Daf 95XF tractor pushing up the overall figure.
