FIRST OF ALL,! would like to thank Commercial Motor for all its support in our time of need, also to all the truckers, people and organisations who have signed the petition and made contributions to my wife at the various truck shows she has visited to raise support for me.
Hopefully by the time this goes to press I will have won my appeal and will be back in Nottingham trying to rebuild my life and get back to some sort of normality.
If you do fall foul of the law in Greece I would like to point out that you are guilty —no matter what you say to either the police or the lawyer or even a panel ofjudges.You have to prove you are innocent — they don't have to prove you are guilty.Also,be prepared to part with a lot of money as there is no such thing as legal aid in Greece. l am not talking about a couple of hundred euros but something in excess of €80,000 (L56.000). If you do find yourself in prison be ready for a big shock because if you don't have any money you go without the bare essentials like soap and toothpaste (and cigarettes) and they won't give you the chance to work to earn any either.
You would be lucky even to be put in a cell with anyone who speaks English.
If you have to stay in a police cell. if you don't have money then you don't get anything to eat or drink and you will be lucky to get even a drink of water.You only get to use the toilet if the police feel like escorting you there and back.
So please heed my warning and check your trailer very, very carefully, whether you have a load on-board or not.
