Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

16 October issue but was dismayed by its introduction, which is totally misleading. You state:"Fitting non-OE parts will invalidate the warranty of any new vehicle." Wrong!

Although the article explains that savings on parts for older vehicles can be made by sourcing parts from independent factors, in the Automotive Distribution Federation's (ADF) view the opening statement will seriously misinform truck operators.

A vehicle assembler (VA) or his franchised dealer cannot refuse a warranty claim on the basis that the vehicle has been serviced outside the VA network or that parts used in that service were supplied outside the network. As long as the vehicle has been serviced in accordance with the VA's servicing schedule and the parts used are of appropriate quality, the warranty remains in force. For instance, if an oil filter, obtained from an independent source, was fitted by a non-franchised service centre to a vehicle as part of a general service and, subsequently, the rear axle developed a fault, then the dealer would not be able to refuse a warranty claim on the axle. Obviously,if the filter were to fail, then the service centre that fitted it would be liable to any warranty claim that arose for its failure.

Our members include many global OE parts suppliers to vehicle assemblers and, via our members, they supply the same parts as are fitted 'on the line' to the afterrnarket. So,not only can operators buy their replacement parts with confidence in the quality, they can receive them in the boxes of the OE manufacturer. Not some spurious VA boxed item!
