ELEVEN MEN, including two truck drivers, have been jailed for a total of 144 years for their part in a flOm drug smuggling operation.

A total of 233kg Class A and B drugs were found in vats of chemical solvent hidden in a truck as it arrived at Dover on 29 May 2002. The haul included: 119kg of heroin; 99kg of amphetamine; 14kg of cannabis; and lkg of cocaine.

Truck drivers Ian Longworth from Bolton and Terence Pimley from Warrington were among nine men jailed at Liverpool Crown Court after pleading guilty to the importation of Class A and B drugs into Britain.'The jury convicted another two men who pleaded not guilty on similar charges, while three others who pleaded guilty to importation charges have yet to be sentenced.

Detective Superintendent David Brown from Greater Manchester police says:"! know that this seizure is just the tip of the iceberg but this should serve as a severe warning — we are constantly working on different operations and carrying out surveillance work."

"A great deal of effort by law enforcement agencies both at home and abroad is required in our fight against drugs and this demonstrates our collective intention to deliver results," says Peter Hollier, head of Customs investigations in the North-West.
