Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• London Buses, currently engaged in a High Court battle with the Transport and General Workers Union over its plans for putting more routes out to tender, has revealed that it hopes to save E30 million (10% of its annual costs) in a restructuring programme which could cause the loss of some 500 jobs over the next two years.

According to LB the cuts are expected to come from white collar staff and will not affect bus crews, but some garage jobs could be lost. As part of the plan LB wants to give more responsibility to the new garage general managers.

The Transport and Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) says the proposals have "come as a shock". As Commercial Motor went to press the union was due to start talks with LB.

LB claims it will "follow its usual procedures for redeploying and retraining where possible, or offering voluntary severance", but TSSA says that the plan could run into difficulty if alternative jobs cannot be found.
