IN Vincent and Margaret Corbett, trading as V & M Corbett Transport of Much Wenlock, escaped with a warning when they appeared at disciplinary proceedings in Birmingham following drivers' hours and tachograph convictions.

Corbett told West Midlands Licensing Authority John Mervyn Pugh that the partnership had been in business for 25 years and it was only over the last 12 months that they seemed to have hit a bad patch. He had done everything he could to put the firm's house in order.

Mervyn Pugh said he would normally cut the duration of the licence in such circumstances, but as it expired in March 1988 he felt it wOuld be unfair to do so.

Corbett was warned, however, that if there was any repetition of these offences the firm would lose its licence: the falsification of tachograph records was a disgrace for an operator of 25 years' experience.

He suggested that a letter be written to the drivers in simple, blunt language pointing out that the licence was at risk. He also wanted the firm to submit reports to the enforcement section every 28 days stating that tachograph charts had been checked and detailing any discrepancies, and the action taken. • "Operators and drivers are a team, and if a match is lost it is the whole team that has lost," said Mervyn Pugh.
