Anniversaries again. Last week's annual luncheon of the National Association of Warehouse Keepers was the 25th—and the special Savoy menu was printed appropriately in silver for the occasion. And it was an occasion, with Viscount Simon, chairman of the PLA, and Sir Keith Joseph, Shadow Secretary of the Board of Trade, as principal speakers.
One toast was by H. F. Marks, of Alfred Bell Ltd., who had that morning been made a vice-president of the NAWK—a nice tribute to one who has contributed so much to the work of the association and who will. I understand, soon be retiring from business. But with that vice-presidency, NAWK will presumably not be losing him.
This year's chairman, succeeding Philip Packham who is now very busy with his consultancy (which, he tells me, is not so tiring as haulage), is J. D. Lockhart, of Storage and Haulage Ltd. It's a TDG company, so it was appropriate to see Philip Henman's successor as TDG chairman, Mr. Fraser, on the top table.
There was a record attendance at the luncheon-220. which is the exact total of present membership. President Arthur Lawson Johnston revealed that the membership is growing regularly at 10 per cent per annum. The best sort of investment.
