Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• An increase in tyre life from 20,000/ 25,000 to around 40,000 has been obtained by Fyffes Group Ltd., 15 Stratton St., Piccadilly, London W1 , by employing radial tyres in place of the conventional cross-ply type. And the use of radials gives promise of a worthwhile gain in fuel consumption.

Following exhaustive tests over three years of radial tyres (fitted with tubes) the entire Fyffes fleet of some 400 vehicles will be equipped in due course with tyres of this type. The fleet comprises 3and 5-ton Austins and 5-ton Bedfords and Fords, the average annual mileage of the fleet being about 15.000. While 17in. tyres are fitted to the Austin 5-tonners, the remainder are equipped with 16in. tyres which provide advantages with regard to loading convenience.

The vehicles are used for countrywide deliveries and operations include motorways and stop-start work with a preponderance of the latter. Of special importahce with regard to bodywork the radials give a better cushioned ride when the vehicle is running unladen.
