Union men from our industrial correspondent • The 12-man No. 1 Docks Group committee of the Transport and General Workers' Union will visit Antwerp and Rotterdam next month to discuss the provision of container cargoes which exist on the Continent.
This union committee has opposed the use of Tilbury container berth by Associated Containers and Overseas Containers because an appropriate agreement on handling rates cannot be reached with the dockers concerned.
On June 9, the union men will fly to Brussels and, the next day, shop stewards will tour the port of Antwerp and see at first-hand port operations and developments for container traffic. In the evening of June 10, they will drive to Rotterdam for another port tour, looking at container facilities on the following day. Finally, on June 12, the party will inspect the grain-handling facilities at Botlek before flying back to London.
The visit has been arranged by Mr. Stanley Turner, Port. of London Authority chief Docks manager, who gave the invitation to Mr. Peter Shea, TGWU official representing the PLA workers.
Mr. Turner said on Tuesday that shop stewards should have the same opportunity of seeing the Continental competition as other sections of the port labour and his own officers.
