YEARSLEY GROUP plans to keep on subcontractors formerly working for Celsius First after buying some of the troubled company's assets last week.

Rut while this offers some reassurance of future work to the 60odd hauliers owed money by Celsius First, one operator says he has been advised not to expect to collect outstanding debts.

Yearsley Group has six depots; it has taken on three of Celsius First's seven cold stores at Bellshill (Glasgow),Grimsby and Wisbech. It has also taken over one contract operated by Celsius First from its Hams Hall depot in the West Midlands.

A Yearsley Group spokeswoman says the depots will be visited this week and staff will be told what is happening. "At least in the short term we will carry on as always," she says. Up to 170 Celsius First employees will transfer to Yearsley, but the picture isn't as rosy at Celsius First's subcontractors.

Alan Knight, owner of AM Knight Transport in Hampshire, claims to be owed almost £69,000 and says he has been told there is little chance of seeing it again: "I am just going to have to battle on. I am surprised we haven't seen more of their [Celsius First's] contractors fold."

Garry Edwards, owner of Hodnet liansport, based in Shropshire, says he is owed £45,000 by Celsius First.

Yearsley Group has a fleet of 100 vehicles; the deal has boosted its cold store capacity by 50%.
