HAULIERS in several branches of industry should reap considerable benefit from the fact that the February returns show a material increase in the importation of building and joinery woods, as compared with the figure for last year. Larger quantities are expected from Canada and North Europe. The leather markets, too, are receiving useful inquiries, which, it is hoped, will result in good business.

Buyers in the drapery and clothing line are getting well forward in readiness for Whitsun and the summerholiday trade, and orders on merchants' books are well in excess of those for 198.

Scotland, Practically all shipyards on the Clyde have new constructional work in hand, this remark also applying to yards on the Firth of Forth.

Argyll C.C. is to construct a bridge at Loch Awe, at an estimated cost of R80,000. An orthopmclic department and additional wards are to be provided at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow. Schools are to be erected at Niddrie Mains, Renfrew Road, Paisley, and at Penecuik.

North-east Coast.

The general outlook in the iron and steel industry in Middlesbrough is promising, many substantial contracts for various materials having been arranged. Producers of requisites for the shipyards are busier than for some time past.

The General Steam Navigation Co., London, has placed an order with Furness Shipbuilding Co., Newcastleon-Tyne, for a twin-screw motor ship.

Yorkshire.

Bradford woollen manufacturers are busy and here, as in Nottingham, the hosiery and men's wear trade is active.

Scarborough T.C. proposes to erect 408 houses at an estimated cost of £15(),960, also 56 houses for aged persons. A school is to be built on the Northstead Estate. Another school is to be constructed on Priory Estate, Bridlington. Canton P.C. has approved layout of 90 houses on the ring road. Fylde R.D.C. has passed plans for 129 houses.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

Hide and leather markets are brightening and buyers of these commodities are making many interesting and hopeful inquiries.

A development scheme at Morecambe is to be carried out which will involve the expenditure of approximately £250,000. In the Lancashire cotton trade, makers of high-class fabrics are doing a good business with the home trade.

Two schemes are proposed by Chadderton U.D.C., involving the erection of 1,300 houses. Plans are being prepared by Mr. J. L. Edwards, architect, Manchester, for the layout of 800 houses at Adswood Hall Farm Estate, Cheadle, for Adswood Estate, Ltd. Ellesmere Port U.D.C. is making application for sanction to erect a permanent market.

Midlands.

. Hosiery manufacturers in Nottingham are busy, the silk-hose and men's half-hose departments being well employed. The plain-net branch of the lace trade is much brisker and practically all the machinery is in operation. The rayon-underwear trade shows definite signs of improvement.

All sections of the pottery industry show an improvement and export figures lot February record a considerable increase compared with the corresponding month of last year. Birmingham reports the placing of good orders for heavy steel, and conditions generally are more active. The edge-tool trade in this district is busy, whilst the demand for hardware of all descriptions shows a steady increase. The activity amongst engineering concerns catering for the motor trade, reported last week, continues.

It is hoped to raise £100,000 for the Coventry and Warwickshire hospitalex tension scheme. Salop C.C. estimates the following requirements :—(Erection of schools) Alveley senior, Harlescott, Knowle senior, Madeley senior, Whitchurch junior. (Alterations and addi

Wales.

A site is being sought at Cardiff for the erection of a health-products factory.

West Country.

There is considerable activity in the timber dockyards. Bristol T.C. is to proceed with the revised scheme for municipal buildings at College Green and Park Street.

Bast Anglia.

A foreshore-development scheme is to be carried out at Skegness, involving the construction of a marine walk and sea-defence works. Many boot and shoe factories which have been working on short time are now approaching normal. .

London and Home Counties.

Luton millinery manufacturers are having a difficulty in solving the labour problem in order to cope with the big demand for fine-straw hats. Arrivals of timber at the London docks are beginning to increase and the season for activity in this branch of the haulage business is beginning earlier than usual.

Brighton Technical College is to be extended at an estimated cost of £18,690. Ruislip-Northwood U.D.C. has received plans for 442 houses at Fore Street Farm Estate, Eastcote, for C. Meaker and Co. Edmonton E.G. is to acquire sites for schools at Church Street and near Weir Hall; a central school is to be built •at Bull Lane, whilst Raglan and Houndsfield Schools are to be extended.

The Port of London Authority is to erect timber-storage sheds at Surrey Commercial Docks, at an estimated cost of £80,000. An hotel is to be built near Petts Wood Station for Mr. A. J. Cope. 'London Docks.
