• The Vehicle Inspectorate has told its enforcement staff they should not hold up trucks for more than an hour at roadside checks, unless they have identified defects on the vehicles.

Traffic examiners and vehicle inspectors have been given this brief as part of a strict code of conduct, according to VI group manager Bob Lintern. He told delegates at an Institute of Transport Administration seminar last week that the executivr agency wants to reduce its burden on the haulage industry: "We have heard of cases of vehicles being held up for two and a half hours," he said. "That time is worth an awful lot of money to an operator and it could have a considerable impact on drivers hours."

VI area manager Ken Hopley told delegates that they could help themselves at roadside checks, by avoiding the cornmon problem of loose wheelnuts.

He said all drivers should carry a wheel brace in their truck and should be given training on how to check the nuts every day.
