• An estimated 500,000 commercial vehicles in the UK need to be fitted with windscreen washers by October 1 this year. Every motor vehicle will be required to be fitted with a working washer from that date under The Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1969. Tudor Accessories Ltd estimates that 5m motor vehicles do not have working washers.
Mr K. M. Taylor, Tudor's sales director, said in London on Tuesday that there was an "appalling lack of knowledge" about the impending legislation among all sections of the motoring public, including fleet and psv operators. Most of the vehicles requiring washers date from pre-1969 days when the devices were not legally required as original equipment, but there are many vehicles with washers which are not in working order.
