The Reverend W Awdry, creator of the Thomas The Tank Engine series, understandably viewed diesel trains as work of the devil. However, over Christmas watching a Thomas video it appears that the cleric believed 'Horrid Lorries to be spawned from the same diesel-veined devil. The story is simple—three 4x2 rigid lorries arrive on the Isle of

Soder threatening to take away work from the trains, and within minutes each falls victim to their perceived traits—rudeness and aggression combined with over-exuberance—when reversing on docksides and taking sharp bends In quarries. With the expected results. All three trucks are written off in various accidents and loads return to the rails and everybody lives happily ever after.

What the member of the clergy failed to address was how the 'Really Useful Engines' got vital supplies to warehouses, shops, building sites and just about every conceivable venue without its own personal railway station at the back door. Luckily CM can provide the answer; It's delivered by road and increasingly by second-hand trucks fresh from completing Hine 6x4 their first contract hire.

In this section, there are five pretty varied examples and picking a winner is difficult but we were able to single one out—the MercedesBenz Atego 1823.

It was a tough choice but its versatility combined with enough spec to cover just about any conceivable work, plus its age and performance were enough to edge it ahead. The 2211hp engine, true 18-tonne capacity and fairly spacious day cab with strong residual value were too good to ignore. It returned a very good fuel figure and made travelling short and long distances easy to handle. Although possessing only a six-speed gearbox, it was well matched against the rest of the driveline. It had low mileage and the overall condition was very tidy.

CMgot its second Hine tipper In and the 6x4, Second-hand tippers make up a vital part of the market place but, if they can I the job, operators tend to keep them rather than sell. This was the case with Deri Mallison. With 320hp under the right foot, we travelled around with a load of tops at a consistent rate of knots. Although the Nino does not account for many tippers the UK market, those who have bought them swear by them—a pretty stroi endorsement.

The backbone of the haulage industry belongs to the rigids, and particular ti 7.5-tonners which account for the bulk of mufti-drop and urban delivery sector And CMtested the leader of the pack, the iveco Ford Cargo. With a 143hp engine al box body, 1109 VUM produced the outstanding A-road fuel figure of the year, higl lighting its strength in urban and countryside deliveries, A classic ex-rental spec, held itself up as a strong contender for the used rigid title but came up just shortwell-deserved silver medal is in the pest.

MAN provided two decent 17-tonne rigids through its own dedicated used-trui department MAN Select, and via independent dealer Chris Hodge Trucks in ea: London.

At first glance, the MAN M2000 18.224 from the Select programme threatens overwhelm you. Bright Kawasaki lime green with a sleeper cab, long wheelbase ar extended box body, it made for a quite a sight; our photographer wished that ever test truck was so distinctive.

Mounted on steel suspension, it was designed for cube rather than the full T tonnes OVA But once behind the wheel it provided an excellent drive with a crackir fuel result. It Is one of the oldest trucks we have put through the test but that ju: goes to show that these trucks were built to go on and on.

Chris Hodge Trucks provided a younger version of the 18.224 model and, ether!l it was of the same ilk, it could not have been further away from its sister In terms I spec. Short wheelbase, curtains, narrowed day cab and traditionally painted, made a less obvious choice but was no less enjoyable to drive. It produced a compet tive fuel figure overall, slightly hampered by weather and the higher body with sunair management kit on the cab. It had low mileage, in keeping with an 18-month hir tory prior to the test and travelling only locally. Overall, a pretty sound deal.

If Reverend W Awdry were still alive today and in control of the Thomas phenomt non then we're sure even he would concede that the paper arrives via the youngsti on a bike, milk on an electric milk float, and just about everything else from food I furniture, paint to plants, and the very top soil they are planted in, is delivered t our trusty friend—the used rigid truck.
