Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE MONOPOLIES and Mergers Commission investigation of the bus industry is unlikely to be published before Easter, and the Commission has powers to continue any investigation for up to three months more.

MMC director-general Sir Godfrey Le Quesne is heading the investigation into West Midlands PTE, Bristol Omnibus, Trent, and Cardiff City Transport, and is being aided by five members of the 27-strong panel. These are Prof K. D. George, D.

G. Goyder, E. A. B. Hammond, H.

H. Hunt, and N. L. Salmon.

According to an MMC spokesman, their backgrounds reflect the Commission's spread of academic, industrial, financial, and trades union-oriented members.

If the MMC keeps to its initial six-month deadline for the investigation, which is still in progress, then the report will be published around five weeks after March 8. Much will depend upon final discussions with the Department of Transport, which is co-operating in the inquiry.
