DATSUN has joined its fellow Japanese vehicle makers in introducing a pick-up truck— the 620—to the UK market. It has a 1-ton nominal capacity and uses many components from the company's car range.
The 620 complements the 120Y 7cwt van introduced to the UK late last year.
The all-steel body with tailgate is 1.5m (5ft) wide by 400mm (1.3ft) deep by 2.2m (7.3ft) long and is fitted, as standard, with a rear cab screen guard and rope hooks. A framed tilt is available as an optional extra and the hinge-down tailgate is secured by over-centre locks in the enclosed position and by side fixed chains when in the open position.
The pick-up's a 1.5-litre (91.5cuin) four-cylinder petrol engine developing 57.4kW (77bhp) at 5,200rpm and 118Nm 86.81bft) torque at 3,200rpm (SAE gross). Already proven in saloon cars, the engine has a low compression ratio and runs on two-star fuel.
The drive-line is conventional, having a single-dryplate clutch and four-speed synchromesh gearbox •and live rear axle. Torsion bar with hydraulic damper suspension is specified at the front with semi-elliptic leaf-springs and dampers at the rear.
A split hydraulic, servoassisted, brake system serves drum brakes at each wheel and the pull-out handbrake under the dash is mechanically linked to the rear wheels.
The cab has a full-width bench seat. Its back folds down for access to the jack and other tools, and a parcels shelf and glove box are fitted on the passenger side.
Vehicle instruments and controls have been inherited from the passenger car range.
