Turbines Preferred.

The following is an extract from the annual report of the Singapore Fire Brigade: " Especially when used for augmenting the pressure in the mains, the turbine pump has shown itself superior to the reciprocating pump for fire-extmguishing work in the town."

Benz Fire.Engines.

The German city of Mannheim, known in England as the home of the Benz works, has completely reorganized its fire-extinguishing vehicles on motor lines, and now owns seven petrol-driven automobiles, including a couple of fire-engines, each with a high-pressure rotary pump equal to delivering some 340 gallons of water per minute under a pressure of eight atmospheres. The revolving escape, although propelled by a petrol engine, is, however, extended and manceuvred Icy means of battery-fed eleetromotors. The newest acquisitions emanated from the Benz works, and we may deal with them more fully on another occasion. The decision of the Budapest Corporation to remodel the vehicles of the Fire Brigade on a motor basis begins to take effect early next year.

We learn that Wimbledon's Dennis engine, which is under the charge of Superintendent Butler, the chief officer of the Wimbledon Brigade, made an excellent run from 'Guildford to Wimbledon on the occasion of its delivery. Its reception in the locality where it. is stationed has been marked by many expressions of approval.

At a recent meeting of the Maidens and Coombe U.D.C., it was decided to prepare a special specification for a first-aid motor appliance. Certain improvements, which were noted by the Chief Officer of the Brigade on his recent visit to several towns to inspect various makes of motor fire-engines and first-aid appliances, are to be embodied.

A correspondent points out that the order for three ram-pump Merrywea,ther fire-engines from Sydney Fire Brigade was not placed by the Sydney Municipality at the same time that it ordered the nine (not eight) Dennis turbine engines, but that the smaller order was placed at an earlier date. Apparently. therefore, the turbine pumn is the final choice of the Sydney Brigade.
