THE importance of bus Services being maintained in rural areas was one of the main points of a report published last week by the North-East Industrial and Development Association and the Northumberland Rural Community Council.

"As the deterioration of public passenger transport services seriously threatens the social and economic lite of the countryside, a negative Policy should not be adopted," the repo:t stated.

After detailing the number of railway branch lines that had been closed dowa in the area in the past two years, the report went on: "There are not enoug's passengers to make them [uneconomic bus services] pay. The number of potential passengers is declining and operating costs are likely to continue to

rise.

"The authorities cannot stop a man from surrendering his licence, nor make any man operate a service where he does not wish to do so," it continued, adding that "any iniprovement in rail way services can be ruled out, and it is therefore essential to maintain naral bus services."

"CONVERT RAIL BRIDGE FOR ROAD VEHICLES"

A SUGGESTION that the Royal Albert rail. bridge at Saltash, be converted so that road vehicles cote_d also use it was adopted by Looe Urban District Council on Tuesday. Mr. Eric Williams said that the space betwem the rails could be filled and level cro:sings built at each end of the bridge. Traffic lights would regulate the flow of road traffic between train movsments, breakdown lorries standing by.

He reckoned that 240 vehicles could pass in an hour, and by making a charge of Is., the revenue would be £96 for an eight-hour day. The proposal is to be put to British Railways, the Minister of Transport and Cornwall County Council.
