During the year ended August 31 the Mandslay Motor Co., Ltd., made a net loss of £28,818, as compared with a loss of £13,847 in the previous year, after charging £10,000 as special stock reserve. A credit balance of £4,605 was brought forward, leaving a debit of £24,213, which has been met by an appropriation from capital reserve.

A New Haulage Concern.

The Procter Transport Co. (Lsington), Ltd., has been formed with a capital of 11,000 to acquire (1) the business of a haulage and removal contractor, carried on by W. Procter, at Oiayton Street, Longton, as the Procter Garage Co., and (2) a similar business carried on by T. Mosley, at 93, Anchor Road, Longton. The directors are Messrs. W. H. Berrisford, T. Mosley and W. Procter.

I.A.E. Visit to Leyland Works.

The north-western branch of the Institution tff Automobile Engineers spent the afternoon of December 21 inspecting the works of Leyland Motors, Ltd., and were much impressed by the up-to-date plant and the high degree of accuracy associated with the production of Leyland vehicles. In view of the fact that a paper on experimental development in commercial-vehicle engineering was to be read in the evening, much time was spent in the company's research department.

In the evening, Mr. Markland, manager of the research department, gave his paper, explaining in detail the plant and methods inspected during the afternoon, and generally outlined the functions of his department.

New Engine Burns Pulverized Coal as Fuel.

At the recent Carbon-Caiturant Congress, in Italy, some particulars were given by Herr R. Pawlikowski, the manager of the Kosmos Gesellschaft H. Rudolf Pawlikowski Maschine.nfabrik, of Gorlitz, Germany, of a new engine that he has designed.

It has been named the DieselPawlikowski and its chief feature is the use of pulverized coal as fuel. • The speaker stated that the new engine offered great possibilities for motor vehicles, as well as ships and stationary units.

Agreement Between Furnace Makers.

We are informed that Wild-Barfield Electric Furnaces Ltd., Elecfurn Works, North Road, London, N.7, and Birmingham Electric Furnaces, Ltd., melee Works, Tyburn Road, Erdington, Birmingham, have recently reached an agreement for the interchange of information and rights under their respective patents and patent applications relating to electric furnaces employing centrifugal fans, and to the air-circulation methods used with such fans.

The arrangement will give usersthe benefit of the combined experience of both these concerns in respect of fan furnaces, and will -enable the growing demand for low-temperature operations, such as the tempering of .steel and the heat-treatment of aluminium and its alloys, to be met in an increasingly efficient manner.
