Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

is Necessitating the Closing of Numerous L.N.E.R. Passenger Stations IT has been announced recently that 11fasham and Tanfield L.N.E.R. Stations in Yorkshire are to close and that no more passenger trains will ,operate on the Ripou-Masham branch. Adequate bus services are provided by the United Automobile Services, Ltd., in which the L.N.E.R. Co. has a controlling interest. From June last considerable developments have taken place in the area, and through bus services now operate from Masham to Ripon, Boroughbridge and York to Harrogate, and to Leyburn and Wensleydale.

In October 14 railway stations were closed between York and Scarborough, Mahon and Seamer alone remaining in use. As a result of this, the Wigglyton-York and Strensall-York buses of the West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., now run to York railway station. The villages between Malton and Scarborough are already served by the same company's York-Scarborough service.

At present the L.N.E.R. Co. is engaged in widening its main line between York and Northallerton, to assist the working of through freight trains. Several stations will have to be pulled down for this, and The Commercial Motor understands that some, including Tollerton and Alne Junction, will not be rebuilt. It is believed that this also means the branch line from Alne to Easingwold will be closed for passenger traffic. Road-service competition is heavy in this area and, although Alne and Tollerton are not served by buses in which the L.N.E.R_ Co. has any financial interest, a "West Yorkshire" service runs direct from York to Easingwold and Thirsk.

Fares in this area will probably be raised very shortly.
