• Wigan coach giant Shearings has responded to competition from Yorkshire Traction by introducing the first doubledeckers on its commercial bus service in Barnsley.
Traction had countered the introduction of buses by Shearings with a "Cheap Fares experiment", charging 30p to Athersley and 20p to Kendray on specially painted buses.
Shearings has now brought in three secondhand deckers from Portsmouth. They were destined for school contracts in Kent, but may stay in Barnsley if they prove successful.
