transport and L communications industries rose by 9,000 in 1956. This is revealed in the report for last year of the Ministry of Labour (Stationery Office, 6s.). Changes in the manpower demands of a number of industries, especially redundancies in the motor industry, made necessary redeployment of labour, and the employment exchanges were successful in dealing wAh it.

• A motor manufacturer declared surplus 1,325 workers and later a further 1,300. The men concerned were given three weeks' notice, and by Working day and night at the factories in offices provided by the company, the employment-exchange staff were able to interview the redundant workers during the day and night shifts, and eventually to register for employment all those who wished it. It was possible to make offers of alternative employment to most of the workers long before the three weeks were up.

At the end of last year there were 200.000 male and 53,000 female workers in Iliad passenger transport, these figures being little different from those of 1955. Demand for conductors was eased by the engagement of West Indian immigrants, and by December, 1956, there were 2,700 fewer unfilled jobs than a year earlier.
