C.M.U.A. CALLS FOR AMENDMENT OF NEW BILL.

It is expected that the report stage of Sir Assheton Pownall's Amending Bill will be reached to-day (Friday), and the C.M.U.A.. is pressing for a further amendment of Clause I. The object of the amendment is to secure more adequate control of the fitness of hackney carriages seating fewer than eight passengers; it is intended that such control should apply throughout the country.

Another point arises in connection with Subsection '2.tof Clause 2 of the Bill, which states that the Licensing Authority may, in his discretion, grant a licence for a currency period shortened to meet the requirements of a suitable and convenient pitogramme of work. It is urged that it is not sufficiently clear that this discretion to reduce the duration of A, B and C licences is intended to suit only the Licensing Authority's own programme of work.

A.R.O. Deputation to an M.P.

Mr. Allan Lennox-Boyd, M.P. for Mid Bedfordshire, received a deputation from A.R.O. members, in the county, of whom eight present were Ins constituents. Others attending were Mr. P. J. Anthers (secretary, Eastern Area). Mr. G. Irwin (secretary, Cambridge Sub-area), and Major the Hon. Eric Long.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd gave the deputation a long and sympathetic hearing, and promised to make a serious investigation into the difficulties of roadtransport operators which bad been brought to his notice.

LTnity the Salvation of the Industry. Speakers at a C.M.U,A. meeting at Reading on Monday enlarged on the theme of "unity." and they pleaded that only by the exercise of this grace could the industry weather the storm that was breaking around it, Mr. F. F. Fowler, chairman of the London and Home Counties Division, strongly deprecated statements to the effect that unity was unnecessary and such remarks were likely, he maintained, to do much damage.

Mr. J. L. Kinder, national organizer, asserted that unity was the only salvation for road transport. It was due entirely to the unified action of the railway companies that they had been able to wreak such havoc among their keenest competitor.

An appeal to road operators to join the C.M.U.A. was made by Mr. W. H. J. Hedges, past president of the National Association of Furniture Warehousemen and Removers, who was in the chair. He urged that the C.M.U.A. was the only association that could speak for the whole of the roadtransport industry.

Dartford Tunnel Tolls Excessive.

Complaints that the tolls scheduled in the Dartford Tunnel Bill, before the House of Lords, were unreasonably high, were made at a C.M.U.A. meeting at Grays on Wednesday evening. It was also declared that the schedule was inequitable as between different classes of vehicle and that a definite period for the charging of tolls should be set.

It is proposed to charge tolls of up to Gs. for a journey through the tunnel, which is much in excess of those for the use of the Mersey tunnel.
