• Roads minister Robert Key has ruled out introducing legislation forcing operators to fit close-proximity mirrors on older vehicles. Pressure has mounted for action following a series of deaths involving reversing trucks.
Camden Council has joined police calls to have the mirrors made compulsory for all trucks Three women cyclists have been killed in the past year in or near Camden in collisions with reversing trucks. Last week, a four-year-old boy in Wigan was crushed by a reversing truck.
Key says: "In some cases it would be impossible to meet a height requirement of less than 2m from the ground and give the driver a view necessary to make new legislation worthwhile."
