THE DEPARTMENT of Transport has published formal proposals for a new South Docks road in Hull.

The new road would start at the eastern end of the existing A63 Ferriby by-pass connecting with Boothferry Road, Ferriby Road and Ferriby High Road. The route would run southeast, crossing over the Kings Cross-Hull railway south of Hessle chalkpits, then eastwards near Cliff Mill to pass under the Humber Bridge approach road.

The road would then continue between the railway and the foreshore, crossing Woodfield Lane, Station Road, Ferry Road, and Hessle Haven, then the realigned Manor House branch railway line and Dairycoates subway.

At Daltry Street the new road would turn northwards to join the existing system at Hessle Road by means of a roundabout and an overpass which would allow traffic to continue uninterrupted to the docks.

Two-level interchanges would be provided near Hessle Haven, with links to Itlings Lane and Livingstone Road, and at Dairycoates, with links to Hessle Road and St Andrews Docks.

The proposals also include two new roads linking the proposed new trunk road to existing roads at Hull Road (A1105) via !flings Lane, and at Hessle Road via Brighton Street, an extended bridge to carry Woodfield Lane over the new road and footbridges at Station Road and Ferry Road for pedestrian access.

A local public inquiry into proposals for the M63 Stockport East-West By-pass will be held in Stockport Town Hall, Wellington Road South, starting at 10 am on Tuesday, November 1. It will be conducted by an independent inspector, D. M. Sime.

The Secretary of State for Wales has authorised Gwent County Council to accept the £440,237 tender of Brunswick Contractors (Cardiff) Ltd for the improvement of a section of the Newport-Shrewsbury trunk road (A4042) at Goytre Hall.

In addition, two lay-bys will be constructed.

Proposals for a 1.69km (10.5 miles) length of new trunk road on the A590 at Levens Bridge, Cumbria, have been published by the DTp.

An all-purpose dual-carriageway road would be built between the existing A590 trunk road just north of Low Levens to connect with the A6 trunk road just south of Heaves Lodge.

The DTp has accepted the £153,153 tender of Lincolnshire County Council Direct Labour Organisation for the construction of the diversion on the A158 at Malt Kiln Cottage, Goltho. Work will begin soon and take about nine months to complete.

The DTp is also seeking a compulsory purchase order for land required for a six-mile stretch of motorway to link the M56 in south Wirral with the M53. The extension would be from Hapsford to Lea by Backford.
