ACTION in saving the life of a boy injured after touching a rail power line earned Freightliner maintenance shopman Alan Helm a meritorious service award last week.

Mr Holm received his award from National Freight Corporation chairman Sir Dan Pettit who presented him with a silver salver and a cheque.

The boy was seen on the roof of a Freightliner train. he touched the overhead power . cable and was thrown off the tram with his clothes on fire. Mr Helm took steps to get the power turned off and smothered flames with the overalls. The boy is now recovering.

West Yorkshire Road Car Company has appointed Jonathan Bayliss as its new traffic manager to succession to Peter Townley, newly appointed general manager of Cumberland Motor Services.

At the same time, Alan Stephenson becomes secretary designate of the company.

Bosch has appointed a new engineering manager for its original equipment section. Dr Joachim Buchholz takes over from Ludwig Hease who is to return to Germany.

In his new job, Dr Buchholz will be responsible for all Bosch original equipment.

Magirus Deutz has made two changes in its sales force. John Riley becomes fleet sales manager and IViictlael Eden-Smith becomes a sales executive.

Dinitrol rustproofing makers Astra-Dinol has appointed Robin Bennett as a sales executive and Brett Gardner has joined the company as a technical service supervisor.

Van Hook McArdle has appointed John Byrne as a director of the company. He is a former general manager of CIE and is an honorary member of the UITP.

H and J Quick group chairman Norman Quick has been awarded an honorary master of Arts degree by Manchester University where he is the treasurer and a member of the University Court.

The expansion of Lanca shire Trucks Ltd which recently led to the opening of a Volvo service depot in Trafford Park. Manchester, has also resulted in the appointment of Ray Packenham as service manager for the new depot.

While the emphasis will be on Volvo service, Mr packenham's team will provide facilities for other trucks also.

Thomas W. Harrington, currently chairman and ma= naging director of Goodyear — Great Britain, has been named special assistant to the president of the Goodyear International Corporation, based in Akron, Ohio. He will be succeeded at Wolverhampton by Westi Hansen, at present vice-president of General Products for Goodyear in the United States.

Mr Harrington, who joined Goodyear in 1951, began his overseas service with the company in Brazil and later served in Peru, Venezuela and Italy before becoming chairman and managing director of Goodyear — Great Britain in 1972.

Mr Hansen joined Goodyear in 1948 after his graduation from Yale University. Assigned to industrial products, he rose through. field sales and was named marketing manager for power transmission products at Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1963. Subsequently he became the division's field sales manager, general sales manager and general manager of films and flooring before becoming general Manager of Industrial Products in December 1972.

In 1976, he was elected vice-president of General Products.

Hans Ericson, who chairs the Road Transport Workers' Section of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), is vacating the presidency of the Swedish Transport Workers Union in the autumn.

Ejler Sonder, president of the Danish Transport and General Workers Union (SID), has retired on grounds of health.
