WHEN an application, by Direct Coaches (Birmingham), Ltd., Birmingham, 9, for 15 new excursion and tour licences came before the West Midland Traffic Commissioners, at Birmingham last week, the Commissioners were told that most of these had been withdrawn. A number of operators had originally objected, but as a result of the withdrawals these were reduced to two, Worthington Motor Tours, Ltd., and Eatonways, Ltd., both of Birmingham.

The Commissioners granted licences for day tours to Southend and Woburn Abbey, and for afternoon tours to Stourport and Bridgnorth. They refused permission for a number of other halfday or evening tours. Mr. J. Foley Egginton, for Direct Coaches, said that they held licences for only a small number of excursions and tours and that their patrons had asked for other destinations. Both objectors held licences much greater in scope than those of Direct Coaches, and he suggested that even if the application were granted in full it would make little difference to other operators. For Eatonways, Mr. R. T. Cooper submitted that as Direct Coaches had never made a similar application during 29 years of road traffic licensing, they had never been live excursion operators. The pattern ought not to be disturbed by allowing an operator to encroach on traffic which had been well handled.
