Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TEE Paris heavy-vehicle show having this year been abandoned, certain manufacturers have obtained permission to exhibit in a limited way at the Salem de rAutomobile, to be held in October. Amongst these the house of Laitly will be exhibiting a modifiedverkon of its six-cylinclered engine as fitted to the low-level series of Lally chassis.

This is a 90 MITI. by 130 mm. engine, incorporating a detachable head and with overhead valves operated by push rods and rockers. The cylinders and crankcase are cast in one, and the aluminium sump casting at the base is strongly webbed and provided with four feet, which allow the engine to stand upright when dismounted.

The substantial crankshaft is mounted on three long, plain bearings, the central bearing being 80 mm. long and the rear bearing 103 mm.

Cooling arrangements have been care fully Studied. The cylinder jacketing has the unusual water capacity of 14.1) litres, whilst the centrifugal circulating pump, coupled to the magneto shaft, has an output of 30 litres per minute at 1,000 engine r.n.m.

Dual ignition is employed and the plugs on the near side of the engine are inclined in the cylinder head. They are connected to the distributor, whilst the near-side plugs, which are fitted horizontally, are connected to the magneto. The last-named is mounted forward on the near side of the ,engine, immediately above the dynamo, both magneto and dynamo being driven by pinions engaging directly with the pinion on the camshaft.

Splash lubrication is provided, in addition to the usual forced feed; so that in the event of a temporary stoppage of the pressure system the engine

does not suffer. The gearwheel-type oil pump is mounted on the foot of a shaft driven by skew gearing off the camshaft. The power developed by this engine is 41.8 b.h.p. at 1,000 r.p.m., 61.6 b.h.p. at 1,500 r.p.m., 80.8 blip. at 2,000 r.p.m., and 92.2 h:h.n. at 2,500 r.p.m.

We understand that a standard Laffly L.I(:64• low-level chassis, fitted with this power unit, will probably be shown at the Paris private-ear exhibition.

In addition to its fine range of petrolengined vehicles, the Lally Co. is turning out two types of heavy-oil chassis for which it finds a steadily increasing demand. These are the L.C.211. two-tonner and the L.C.H. tive-tonner, powered by the successful C.L.M. (Peugeot-Junkers) Diesel-type engine, which is manufactured by the Compagnie Lilloise des Moteurs.

The Lally 2-ton L.C.213. model is fitted with a single-cylindered Com, pagnie Lilloise Diesel engine, developing 10 b.h.p. at 1,200 r.p.m., whilst the fivetanner has a twin-eylindered unit giving 45 h.h.p. at 1,100 r.p.m.

The bore and total stroke of the pistons are the same in both engines, namely, 80 mm. by 300 rem. respectively. This gives a total capacity for the small engine of 1,500 c.c., and for the twin of 3 litres. The ruling price of petrol remains so high in France and certain other continental countries that the increasing demand for these Diesel-engined chassis is not surprising.
