The Two Case Models.

THE PRODUCTS of the J. I. Case Threshing Machine Co. range from the 10-18 h.p. paraffin tractor up to a 10-ton steam roller, but at the Traetor Trials the two models which will be demonstrated are the 10-18 h.p. and the 15-27 h.p. machines suitable for ploughing and cultivating. The design of the main frame would seem to have preluded, the most modern method of bolting engine, gearbox and back axle up to form the chassis, for the frame of the Case is a single casting, which forms a bed for the radiator, a pivot point for the front axle, the base chamber for the engine, the housing for the gears and rear axlel and the support for the steering gear. This casting is heavily ribbed, and gears, shafts

and bearings once correctly assembled do not get out of alignment. The engine is placed crosswise on the frame, this permitting of the use of spur gears throughout. It has four vertical cylinders, 3i ins, bore by 5 ins.

stroke. The crankshaft is substantial and runs in two journals, the timing gear being placed within a

readily-detachable cover on the near side of the engine and driving the pump and magneto and cooling fan by an outside shaft, parallel to the crankshaft and situated on the forward side of the engine. The engine is governed, the governor being enclosed but capable of access on removal of the cover. The cylinder head is removable for cleaning of piston heads and regrinding valves, whilst the base chamber is provided with large inspection doors. Hand hole plates are also provided to the water jacket to allow of removal of mud or sediment.

. The circulation of the cooling water is controlled by a thermostat, so that full circulation is not permitted until a temperature of 160 to 180 deg. Fahr. is reached.

The air entering through the carburetter is effectively washed. Outside of the flywheel on the right-hand end of the engine is the first reduction spur gear, and out side of that the belt pulley. A single clutch of the expanding toggle type is used to connect up the power to the wheel drive or to the belt pulley.

All the gears are machined and hardened and each is carried on a short, stiff shaft. Two speeds are provided, the low giving 21 m.p.h. and the high sped ai m.p.h. The bevel wheel drives on to -a large pinion• surrounding the differential mounted on the near-side drive wheel, the drive wheels being 42 ins, in diameter and having a 9 in. face tire.

Aekermann steering is employed and an auxiliary steering device can be furnished. It is fitted to the offside steering wheel and consists of an arm which c38

runs in the furrow, being capable Of adjustment so that the tractor can be rim at different distances from the furrow. The driver can lift the steering device out of the furrow by a cord.

The 10-18 bp. tractor is rated at its lower power on the drawbar : it can develop 13 h.p. to 14 h.p. when drawing a plough or other implement and 18 h.p. for belt work. The b.h.p. of the motor is about 23 h.p. and the drawbar pull 1,666 lb., which is ordinarily sufficient to pull a two-bottom plough 7 ins. to 8 ins. deep. The wheelbase is 63 ins., so that the machine is very compact and can turn in small area. Its weight is 1 ton 13 cwt. and price £375.

The 15-27 h.p. Case tractor does not differ in general design, but there are small differences in detail commensurate with the greater power. The cylinder dimensions are 4 ins, bore by 6 ins, stroke, and the crankshaft runs in three bearings and the cylinder barrels are readily removable, so that a worn or scored cylinder can be easily and quickly replaced without the need for an entirely new engine block. The normal speed of the crankshaft is 900 r.p.m., that of the smaller tractor running at 1,050 r.pan. The rear wheels are 52 ins, in diameter with a 12 in. face, the steering wheels being 32 ins. by 6 ins. The price of this machine is £475.
