Dropping in on Renault dealer JDS Trucks in Oldham reveals two cracking fleet trucKs up for grabs. Kevin Swallow reports.

Last year RenaultTrucks independent dealer JDS Trucks built a used vehicle centre in Oldham dedicated to serving the local area — and with 60% repeat custom it is doing just that.

By offering operators a 24-hour/sevenday-a,week service centre the group can keep trucks on the road, where they ought to be, instead of filing through a nine-to-five repair garage.

Director of used operations, Julian Smith, is shrewd enough to realise his trucks aren't the cheapest but, with a quality deal and solid after-market back-up. purchases from JDS offer good value over a working life.

The JDS Truck group covers the west coast, north to the brink of Carlisle and out east to the A. It has three other sites in Blackburn, Manchester and Leeds where it sells new, as well as some used, but the bulk of 50 to 60 secondhand products normally in stock, which are predominantly Renault, are based in Boardgate, Oldham. JDS Trucks grew out ofJ Douthwaite and Sons, which started up in 1965 with depots in Blackburn and Milnthorpe, Cumbria.

Each vehicle gets a 96-point service and M2 check when it arrives. In the Manchester area operators run mainly tractors or 7.5tonners and, although some vehicles are sold outside of the area, Smith concentrates on a 15-mile radius. While the Premium is still the backbone of the set-up,Midlums are starting to take oft There are not enough Kerax units on the market to meet demand and there is a waiting list for Magnums.
