TRUCKS ARE FINALLY to be awarded star ratings for security in a bid to cut HGV crime and insurance pre miums The Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre at Thatcham. Berkshire is launching the system this week, just over a year after it was asked by major insurers to test and rate all new trucks for security.

The system awards up to 10 stars according to a truck's ability to resist attempts to break into the cab and drive away.

The HGV New Vehicle Security Assessment, devised by Thatcham's security team in collaboration with manufacturers and insurers, covers all aspects of the vehicle and tests not only alarms and immobilisers but entry methods, door and ignition locks, parts markings and other security features.

So far 100 models from 16 manufacturers have been inspected and the results are being posted on the Internet (www.thatcham.org).

Peter Roberts, Thatcham's CEO, says: -It will provide insurers and fleet operators with information and advice on how effective security measures are on a wide range of truck types and manufacturers.

-Following the success of Thatcham's NVSA for private cars in reducing vehicle crime the HGV community will welcome this initiative and look forward to a similar reduction in truck crime."
