CM deputy editor Emma Penny and Road Haulage Association chairman Val Smith delivered a strongly worded letter by truck-to Downing Street. This tells the government that the rise in fuel tax alone, even before the OPEC rise comes into effect, will add £500 a truck to annual running costs.
The RHA believes the government should follow the French system and distinguish between professional and non-professional users of diesel, allowing any fuel duty increases to be reclaimed by operators.
'Transport costs play a major part in competitiveness and this latest tax imposition will further erode the country's ability to complete," says Smith. "A fuel rebate would be simple to do and can easily be backdated to 1 October."
