AN IRISI I TRUCK driver has been fined 000 after being found to be more than five-and-a-half hours over the normal nine-hour daily driving limit.

Basil Ronane, of Ballyhaunis — a driver employed by McGuire International. of Monaghan— had driven for 14 hours 32 minutes when he was checked at Liverpool docks. He pleaded guilty to falsifying a tachograph chart. using a false instrument, exceeding the daily driving period and taking insufficient daily rest when he appeared before District Judge Morris at Liverpool Magistrates Court. Prosecuting for VOSA, John Heaton said that there was only four hours 20 minutes rest available out of the normal 11 when Ronane was stopped on 16 May. Two of the charts produced had been falsified in that the incorrect date had been entered on them in an attempt to show that proper weekly rest had been taken at Viadana on Though the false entry had been made outside the UK. Ronane had used the false chart when he produced it to the traffic examiner at Liverpool Docks. Ronane had admitted that he had been trying to make an earlier ferry than the one that he was booked on.

Fining Ronane £600 and ordering him to pay IWO prosecution costs.the district judge said Ronane knew how dangerous driving while sleepy was.
