Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

It's full speed ahead with the new INV Transporter. Julian Milnes reports.

VOLKSWAGEN'S NEW Transporter van goes on sale this week, 13 years after the previous model was introduced, and the firm is now offering a top-of-the-range option with 172hp on tap.

With roots dating back 54 years via five incarnations, the new model is larger than its predecessor. It's available as a panel or window van, a double chassis-cab, and as a combi. There's a choice of two wheelbases and three roof heights, though initially it will only be available on a short wheelbase with a 2.8 or 3.0-tonne GVW. A 3.2-tonne version is to follow.

Buyers have a choice of a 1.9litre turbo-diesel rated at 84 and 103hp and a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel with 128 or 172hp on tap. No petrol option is planned. The 1.9s have a five-speed manual box; the 2.5s get six speeds. The company has made much of these transmissions, claiming a superior design and shift for the class — a six-speed Tiptronic automatic is available as an option.

Like the previous version, the new Transporter comes with fully independent suspension: standard equipment also includes ABS. traction control, electronic brake-pressure distribution and an electronic dill-lock.

Prices start at i12,820 (ex-VAT) for the SWB 1.9-litre 84hp T28, rising to £17,120 for the SWB 2.5litre 172hp T30 combi.
