Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

minimum THE TRANSPORT and General Workers Union (T&G) has launched a Drivers' Charter for commercial vehicle drivers, in an attempt to prevent pay cuts while reducing working hours.

And the union's new general secretary,TonyWoodley, has given his backing to the Working Time Directive, announcing: "It cannot come too quickly for us."

Woodley was addressing the T&G's hire-and-reward representatives at the launch of the sevenpoint charter, which includes a claim for a £25,000 minimum salary for all drivers and a 48-hour week with no loss of earnings. Woodley says: "It is important to look at the issues highlighted by the Drivers' Charter so we can reverse the downward drift in wages and conditions which we've seen over the past decade."

Referring to the Working Time Directive, he adds: -This vital measure for the industry must not mean a round of pay cuts.

But James Macauley, managing director for Glasgow-based Cadzow Heavy Haulage, blasts the general secretary's comments and says money will not affect the way the industry works.

"We need an exemption. It won't work in our industry." he says. "There's not the manpower available. If you think the workers will be any better off,t hey won't be."
