Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AFTER listening to tributes to the character and work of Ronald Pierce Rainey, transport manager, at Doncaster Quakter Sessions, the Recorder, Mr. Alan Goss, said that he was cutting his intended sentence by half.

Rainey was sent to prison for six months concurrently on three charges of obtaining credit, totalling £189 14s. 3d. by fraud and one of obtaining £100 by false pretences. He had pleaded guilty.

The prosecution said that the false pretences charge arose from Rainey borrowing £100 from a Mr. L. Scott to pay some wages. As a guarantee, Scott was given a log book for a lorry said to be worth £450. The other charges were in respect of television sets obtained on credit from two Doncaster companies.

For Rainey it was said that he committed the offences when desperately in need of money, but expected to repay it. In fact, he had repaid Mr. Scott and it was understood that a cheque was being forwarded to meet the money concerned in the other three charges. Mr. W. Newbould, haulage contractor, said that Rainey was truthful and honest, and he was prepared to take him back, accepting full responsibility.
