Police have seized three trucks and a container worth nearly £250,000 as part of Operation Coppergold, the multi-force crackdown on truck crime throughout the West Midlands.
Following a tip-off police raided an industrial estate in Cradley, West Midlands, where the vehicles were recovered. One was an MAN that had only been stolen less than 24 hours earlier. The container, packed with fitness equipment worth £.29,000, had been taken from an industrial park in Kingswinford on 18 April. So far noone has been arrested.
"The intelligence we have suggests the broken down parts of lorries are going out of the country and onto the Continent, perhaps even further afield, as well as being sold within the UK," says Sgt Graham Moffitt of West Midlands Police. "We believe that the persons responsible are known to the police and we are continuing our investigations."
Over the past 12 months 111m worth of trucks and loads have been stolen in the West Midlands, representing a third of all UK truck crime. Four police forces in the region have teamed to rid the region of its reputation as a truck theft hotspot.
