TRANSPORT SECRETARY Nicholas Ridley said this week that he hoped the tax relief provisions to enable National Bus Company employees to buy the company would prove helpful.

Mr Ridley told MPs in the Commons that it would be "most desirable" for employees of the subsidiaries to be able at the least to participate in shares schemes.

Shadow Transport Secretary Gwyneth Dunwoody urged Mr Ridley to accept the evidence of stockbroking firms that the viable number of companies which could operate services was much larger than the 40 or 50 companies that he seemed to demand.
