GENERAL complaints, mainly about N.-.1 delays in collection, have been made against the services of the Road Haulage Executive by about 40 members of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. Mr. C E. Jordan, chairman of the chamber's transport committee, reported this fact to the council on Monday. He added that the results were particularly serious where goods had failed to connect with steamers and storage charges or return transiabst costs had to be incurred.

The transport committee has now decided not to pursue its original proposal 10 recommend manufacturing members of the chamber to give their short-distance traffic to free hauliers, instead of to the Road Haulage Executive. In his report on an inquiry which had been sent to members, Mr. Jordan said: "It seemed clear that if manufacturers were not satisfied with the Executive's services, they could arrange to use their own vehicles, and it did not appear that the percentage of their goods being carried by the Executive within the 25-mile radius was very large."

Where traders were likely to experience substantial interference with their haulage arrangements, it was agreed that they should support requests by free hauliers for the renewal of permits.
