GOVERNMENT policies for highway management will be overcentralised and unnecessarily expensive, the Association of Metropolitan Authorities has warned.

AMA planning and transportation committee chairman Jack Graham and other representatives met Transport Secretary Nicholas Ridley last week to discuss the proposals contained in the Government White Paper on life after the metropolitan .counties and the Greater London Council are abolished.

"We told him that his Department's programme for highway work goes far further towards central direction and control than is necessary from the point of view of financial forward planning," said Mr Graham.
