Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The biggest problem of operating trucks in the developing world is keeping them on the road. Not because they often travel along unmade tracks, but because of the maintenance men.

Or should we say the lack of them.

In many underdeveloped countries they simply don't exist. And when they do there are far too few to go round.

Which means that a breakdown can quicldy turn an operator's biggest asset into his biggest liability.

Even routine servicing can be a problem. Not because of time or cost, but because there just isn't the skilled labour to do it. To cope with these conditions International Harvester created a range of engines with the emphasis reliability and simplicity. The lessons they learnt from 1 development programme were bull into the International D-358 diesel.

The engine that powers the Seddon Atkinson 200.

The result is that our truck has one of the simplest engines to ser of any 16-tonner on the road.

It even prompted one reviewc comment "whoever designed that engine knew all the nightmares of maintenance men:' The design of the engine doesn't y save money in the service bay, it ) saves it at the filling pump. A claim t every truck manufacturer makes.

But let's look at the Ls. Last year the [don Atkinson ) beat five rtpetitive 16-tonners in Commercial Motor road tests with an overall fuel consumption figure of 11.7 mpg.

Combine that kind of performance with ease of servicing and you've two very good reasons why the 200 spends more time on the road, and operators spend less keeping it there.

And to a large extent we've got the problems of the developing world to thank for that.
