rERLOADING offences led to P & 0 Roadways of Felixstowe being ed £500 and two of the company's drivers £150 by the St mudsbury, Suffolk magistrates last week.

Prosecuting for Eastern ensing Authority Ken Peter, chael O'Sullivan said that two the company's vehicles had en stopped in a weight check March 15.

The first vehicle, driven by Richard Prentice, was found to have a second axle overload of 7.9 per cent.

The second vehicle, driven by Charles Skippings, was found to have an axle overload of 11.2 per cent, a gross overload of 7.4 per cent and a train weight overload of 3.3 per cent.

Referring to prevlious convictions against the company, Mr O'Sullivan said there was a comprehensive list of 43 offences in the Eastern Traffic Area with fines imposed totalling £7,465.

Admitting the offences by letter, the company said that it operated nearly 400 vehicles. In the first case there had been no facilities to enable Mr Prentice to weigh the axles of his vehicle and in the second case, the company had accepted a customer's sealed unit.

The magistrates fined the company £50 on each axle offence and £200 on each of the gross and train weight offences. Mr Prentice was fined £25 and Mr Skippings £125.

Ferrymasters, a P & 0 subsidiary, recently specified 6x2 tractive units for 38 tonne operation because its principals would not always supply loads which met the critical axle loadings for 4x2 units.
