• Fish carriers in north-eastern Scotland were warned last week to "look out" as they would be under surveillance for suspected overloading. The warning was from Mr A. Birnie, LA for Scotland, after two firms appeared before him to show why their Licences should not be revoked or curtailed under the Transport Act, 1968.

The LA had heard evidence from Mr Peter Burns, part-owner of P. Burns and Son, hauliers, Fraserburgh, and Mr Eric Gove, a partner of A. Gave and Sons. Gourdon. Mr Burns agreed that when one of his fish lorries was stopped it had an overload of more than 14tons.

Mr Gove, who admitted being prosecuted for having 16-lewt over the permitted limit, said he discovered only after he weighed them that boxes from Gourdon weighed 9+ stones and boxes from Peterhead 10 stones.

Mr Birnie reserved his judgment.
