Horseboxes, Livestock Carriers and Special Types the only Representatives of Powered Vehicles: Wide Range of Trailers to Meet all Agricultural Needs

FOR the second year running, there will be no commercial vehicles, other than specialized types, at the Royal Show. Last year, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders imposed a ban on their vehicle-maker members from exhibiting, but exception was made where the vehicles were to be shown as complete horseboxes or cattle trucks, or where they were built for logging or specialized duties on the land.

This. forecast is, therefore, confined to such types and to certain auxiliary equipment such as trailers, loading devices and service components, This year the Show, which runs from July 6-9, will be held at Windsor. On the first day the opening time is 8 a.m. and on other days 9 a.m.; closing time will be 8 p.m. each day. Rates of admission are: Tuesday, Ll; Wednesday, 10s. before 2 p.m. and 5s. after that time; Thursday, 5s.; Friday, 2s., 6d. Parking fee for coaches is 10s. per day and for cars 5s.

The Land-Rover, of which six models will be shown by the Rover Co., Ltd., Meteor Works, Solihull, Birmingham, on Stand 239, will need no introduction to the farmer. Five of the vehicles will be of 7-ft. 2-in, wheelbase, and the sixth, which will be shown as a pick-up truck, has a wheelbase of 8 ft. 11 in.

Of the five, there will be one in basic form, another fitted with a front winch and a third with a power mower featuring the rear power take-off and engine governor. A fourth machine will be adapted to take a circular saw and will show the rear power take-off, engine governor and pulley unit, whilst the remaining one will make a feature of the rear power take-off.

For heavy logging work and similar duties there will be two Hannibal,tractors for inspection. These will be shown by Universal Power Drives, Ltd., Aintree Road, Perivale, Greenford, on Stand 599.

The specification of these heavy-duty four-wheel-drive machines includes a Gardner five-cylindered oil engine of 85 b.h.p. rating, a five-speed primary gearbox and a two-speed transfer box which takes the drive to the front and rear axles. Winch drive is through the five speeds and reverse of the primary gearbox, the rope pull ranging from 68,000 lb. at 28 ft. per min. to 8,400 lb. at 215 ft. per min.

A third exhibit on this stand will be a mechanical four-wheel-drive shovel having a Gardner five-cylindered engine producing 94 b.h.p. This machine is designed for cutting and digging operations and would be capable of the heaviest duties.

A logger and a 10-ton load carrier will form the exhibit of Douglas Equipment, Ltd, Kingsditch Lane, Tewkesbury Road, Cheltenham, on Stand 600. The Douglas four-wheeldrive logger is powered by a sixcylindered oil engine producing 125 b.h.p. at 1,800 r.p.m.

Eight speeds are available through a four-speed primary gearbox and a twospeed auxiliary box. The tractive effort claimed for this machine is 33,600 lb., the maximum gradient climbable with a gross load of 32 tons being 1 in 3.74.

The Douglas load carrier is a sixwheeler and has a Leyland Comet sixcylindered oil engine which develops a maximum of 90 b.h.p.

Six-wheel Drive

Ten speeds are available, the 1 to 1 ratio of the two-speed box providing optional front-wheel drive, and the low ratio of 2.204 to 1 for six-wheel drive. The tractive effort claimed is 15,180 lb., the maximum gradient climbable with 10-ton payload being 1 in 2.4.

Vincents of Reading, Ltd., Station Square, Reading, will show, on Stand 266, an example of their Windsor threehorse box and a Streamline three-horse box, both based on Bedford chassis.

Both boxes have padded and matted stalls with a compartment for the grooms at the rear. A feature of the Streamline model lies in the use of Vincent springs to control the rear and side ramps.

On Stand 319, Carmichael and Sons (Worcester), Ltd., The Butts, Worcester, agents for Thornycroft vehicles, will have on display a cattle truck with container body of their own design and construction. The framing is in aluminium sections, the panelling also being in this material.

At the rear there is a spring-assisted aluminium ramp providing entrance to the aluminium floored container. Hinged self-loading decks, controlled ventilation to the front and sides and two calf doors on the near side form other features of the body. ['his interesting Carmichael produca will be shown on a Thornycroft rdy Star oil-engined chassis of 13 ft.

The cab will be of the mnyeroft pressed-steel type.

In addition to the trailers to be shown by Rice Caravans, Ltd., Cosby, near Leicester, on Stand 269, this concern will have a horse ambulance trailer. A feature of the Rice design is the use of four close-coupled wheels. which is claimed to give increased stability and a comfortable ride for the occupants of the trailer.

A complete range of County screw and hydraulic tipping trailers is to be shown by The Salop Trailer Co., Ltd., Midland Carriage Works, Old Coleham, Shrewsbury, on Stand 63.

In addition to many models of their range of trailers, including the Hardi. way all-steel type, Whitlock Bros., Ltd., Great Yeldham, Essex (Stand 375), will have for demonstration examples of their Dinkum digger-trench excavator. Designed for use with Fordson and Ferguson tractors, it can be supplied with a type of bucket for excavating trenches from 10 in. to 30 in. wide, up to a depth of 9 ft.

Taskers of Andover (1932), Ltd., Waterloo Ironworks, Andover, Hants, will have on display, on Stand 453, a full range of trailers.

A livestock carrier, designed for loading on to a pick-up truck, will be featured by Buckland Body Works, Ltd., Buntingford, Herts, on Stand 40. The method of manipulating the carrier is by means of a simple block and tackle.

Three models are available, that for the Austin A70 pick-up weighing 5 cwt., the Austin A40 model lt cwt., and the Commer model 2,1 cwt.

Examples of their Sholderhi and Vertiswing tailboard loaders will form the exhibit of A. J. Mackaness, Ltd., Belling, Northampton, on Stand 46.
