THE M.O.W.T is to be congratulated upon the excellent instruction book which it is issuing to all operators in connection with the Government Utility gas producer, Marks VI and VII. It is clearly written and profusely illustrated with good drawings. Practically every part is shown in perspective, and some in part-section, whilst certain essential operations are also illustrated.

The foreword points out that the unit described has been evolved by the Government and applied by five leading motor makers. It embodies improvements suggested from intensive trials carried out by some of the largest goods-vehicle operators., and will do the work for which it is designed if it be given proper attention.

A wise statement is that when converted to producer gas, an engine is not as efficient as when running on petrol. It does not develop the same power or provide the same liveliness, and it requires a certain amount of additional attention from the driver and maintenance staff, but it will play a vital part in conserving liquid fuel. For this reason alone it is up to -every operator and driver to accept it in the right spirit and make sure that it does its job. Road transport, the manual adds, is vital to the continuance of the war and the life of the community. It must, and will, be carried on. The time may come when sufficient liquid fuel will not be available even for essential services. If that does happen, it will be necessary to operate a far more substantial percentage of road vehicles on producer gas.

Bagged fuel for small operators is already available from the dealer of the motor manufacturer who is appointed to convert the vehicles concerned. The names of other selected dealers can be obtained from area fuel organizers, or from the bulk-fuel suppliers listed in the manual.

. A rather unusual point is that the producer is sold to operators under M.O.W.T. warranty, by which the Minister undertakes to .make good defects in material or workmanship deveroping within 90 days from the date of acquisition, but excluding tyres, filter cartridges and packings, also materials, components or workmanship involved in the adaptation of the vehicle oi engine.

.Every phase of operation is covered in the manual, even including hints for drivers and notes on the law•as it affects vehicles run on producer gas.
