WE regret to record the deaths of vv MR. JOHN STORER NICHOLL, C.B.E., MR. FREDERIC STANLEY BENNETT, MR. CHARLES MURRAY and MR. F. A. STEPNEY ACRES.

Mr. Nicholl, who was 70, was a leader of the road transport industry. Among the posts he had held were those of chief officer (research and charges) of the former Road Transport Executive, president of the Institute of Transport from 1941-43, member of the Transport Advisory Council 1934-43, and vicepresident of " the Commercial Moto: Users' Association. He had also been chairman of the highways transport subcommittee of the British National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce. He became associated with McNamara and Co., Ltd., in 1920, and was vice-chairman when they were acquired by the British Transport Commission, Mr. Bennett, who was 84, was managing director of S. F. Bennett, Ltd., and was one of the pioneers of the motor industry. He was an enthusiastic sporting driver from 1903 onwards and had been a councillor and trustee of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders since 1906. He was vice-president of the Society from 1928-1929 and 1933-1934. He was a member of the Ministry of Transport's technical advisory committee on road research and he originated the general trade licence plate.

Mr. Murray was a director. of John Stewart and Co. (Wishaw), Ltd. He had been associated with coachbuilding in Scotland for about 30 years.

Mr. Acres was before the war assistant to Mr. C. E. King, chief engineer of Vauxhall Motors, Ltd. When war broke out he came back from retirement to become the company's military vehicle engineer. He died on Christmas Eve at the age of 77.
