The three views of a universal joint, which we reproduce at the foot of this page, show one which has been introduced, by the Parsons Motor Company, Limited, of Town uay, Southampton, chiefly for use in motor-boat work. The solid construction of this joint makes it very suitable for use on heavy commercial motors. The joint consists of two heavy, forged forks, on each of which two bearing pins stand outwards and work in the phosphor-bronze-bushed recesses of the split, steel ring by means of which the two halves of the joint are coupled. peller shaft. The makers stock these joints in a variety of sizes of shafts, ranging from i inches up to 2!1 inches in diameter. It is one of the few joints we know of which will allow of an angular movement of the propeller shaft equal to is degrees, and the very moderate prices at which they are listed by the makers should make them widely used. As held in stock, the forks are bored for parallel shafts, and without keyways, but they can be supplied either with taper or screwed holes and with keyways cut to any required dimensions.
